Most people work hard to get into a career that pays them for something they love doing. In other words, they look forward to getting a dream job, a dream career. A popular career option is that of a chef. Chefs are in great demand nowadays, and the job pays well too. Cooking is considered an art, and in a way, chefs are creating art every day and making money in the bargain. This is unlike a painter's job; he spends all his time creating art and very little time making money. Being a chef is a practical career option because it pays well and in a consistent manner. A good chef can make good money. There is no shortage of jobs for a talented chef. However, the interested candidate has to keep in mind a few basic factors while accepting a job in any restaurant or hotel.
It is advisable to pay careful attention to the terms and conditions of employment before signing the contract. A good contract will list out all the factors related to your employment with the hotel, restaurant or cruise ship, as the case may be. Ensure that you are getting the benefits and wages that were promised to you at the time of acceptance of the job. Make sure that the salary figure is put down in writing in the contract. If a wage increase was promised, see that it has been put down in the contract. You may be in for a rude shock if the organization you plan to work for, does not keep to its promises. Some employers are in the habit of making verbal promises but avoid putting them in the contract, so that it can be denied later.
Every contract is negotiable; it is no different with a chef's contract for employment. If some point is being omitted, ask the employer to revise the contract. Ensure that all leave benefits, retirement benefits and health insurance benefits are listed in the contract. If in case the employer is not willing to negotiate or make any changes, then you are better off working for another employer. It is always better to work for an organization that is transparent in its dealings and respects its employees.
The contract of employment for chefs should cover all aspects relating to the job and the organization. One should pay careful attention to the clauses, terms and conditions listed in the contract. Neglecting to do so may have disastrous consequences.
